Unfunny Paintings is the first solo exhibition in Barcelona by German multidisciplinary artist Matti Schulz. The exhibition brings together a series of paintings and drawings in both large and small formats, in which humour, popular culture and social criticism coexist within a visual universe that is as absurd as it is recognisable.
The exhibition’s title, Unfunny Paintings, functions as a paradox. Rather than describing the works, it challenges the expectation that humour should be immediate, obvious or universal. The paintings may provoke instant laughter, a delayed smile or no reaction at all. In doing so, the artist frees his images from the obligation to be funny and embraces a form of humour that remains open to multiple interpretations.
Matti Schulz’s artistic practice lies at the intersection of everyday observation, popular culture and absurdity. Through a visual language infused with irony, he subtly shifts familiar scenes into ambiguous situations where seriousness can become ridiculous and what appears to be comic can conceal a more critical reading.
