‘Caverna’ is the result of a deep transformative process undertaken by Isabel Rabassa, a visual artist whose practice centers around oil painting as a way to explore the symbolic, the archetypal, and the unconscious. Her work, situated between abstraction and mysticism, invites contemplation that transcends the visible and connects with the core of human experience.
Over the course of three years, Isabel withdrew into voluntary seclusion, guided solely by intuition. She stepped away from the expressive gestures of her earlier work to enter a process of silence and inner search, resulting in a series of over thirty nearly black monochrome paintings. These works evoke cold, humid, and primal spaces—caverns where light barely filters through, yet where a patient gaze uncovers life in the shadows.
Over time, color began to return. Figures, animals, and reflections emerge from the darkness, signaling a pictorial and vital rebirth. This exhibition marks the transition between two worlds: the deep and the visible, the contained and the revealed.
In 2021, Isabel was awarded First Prize in the International City of Barcelona Art Prize. Her work has been exhibited in institutions and venues across Venezuela, the United States, Germany, Austria, and Spain.
