The exhibition “Block” by Sasha Sime brings together a series of “blocks” depicted on sheets and experimented with in ceramics. The first “blocks” emerged in 2018 as a contrast to the abstract expressionist works the artist was creating at the time.
“There were three blank canvases, waiting to be painted, but instead of small details, scratches, and flow, I decided to cut the surface of the canvas into huge, massive parts — blocks. For me, the blocks are the visual expression of focus. I chose a basic material: ink, and let it flow — slowly, stroke by stroke, pushed by my receptive movement. Focus, repetition, and gravity — three components of the blocks in this exhibition. It was also my first experience with ceramics — a thick, flattened, and pocked clay. I took a base from my ink drawings and then played with depth and the material itself, exploring its physical properties.”
Sasha Sime (Rusia, 1982) moved to St. Petersburg in the early 2000s, where she studied Information Design and Multimedia Art. In 2011, she relocated to Barcelona, influenced by abstract expressionism and Catalan art povera, focusing on the relationship between action and image in painting. Later, she adopted a visual language close to minimalism, integrating color field painting, gravitational points, and objects. Her works combine the purity of minimalism and the sensuality of abstract expressionism, expressed in textures and details. She focuses on the relationship between geometric shapes, color fields, and three-dimensional volumes, basing her compositions on physical principles such as gravity, mass, absorption, density, and resistance.
